Barley in Asir is a staple crop, vital for the sustenance and livelihood of mountain communities. Barley’s adaptability to cold and limited rainfall makes it suitable for high terraces and challenging terrains, ensuring food security for families and communities.
The cultivation process begins with soil preparation and careful selection of seeds passed down through generations for their resilience and quality. The plant requires daily care until it reaches the optimal stage for harvest, also referred to as “Al-Sareem,” a moment of joy and celebration after months of labor.
Historically, harvesting was done manually using tools like the “Mahsh” and “Shareem,” while today, machinery eases the work, yet the communal spirit remains strong. After harvesting, stalks are transferred to the “Jareen” for threshing and then dried in the sun during “Tashreeq,” with traditional songs and cooperative efforts accompanying each step.
Barley is used to prepare Soweig, porridge, and other traditional dishes, as well as animal feed, forming an integral part of a sustainable agricultural cycle. Barley in Asir reflects the community’s ability to convert natural challenges into lasting nourishment and demonstrates their deep connection to the land and its resources.
